Fortune telling exists for only one reason: A hope that knowledge of what will happen tomorrow (or at some point in the future) will allow us to put it to use or take advantage of some opportunity we might otherwise miss.

Its deeply rooted in our fear of what is unknown, and you can't get much more unknown than tomorrow.

Are fortune tellers fake?

In the Bible: Book of Deuteronomy, there is a reference to fortune-telling in the Book of Isaiah (8:19). In this verse, people are encouraged to turn to God in order to find answers to their questions about the future, rather than to witches and mediums. New Testament references are also available as well and in each case, fortune telling is seen as contrary to both Jewish and Christian teaching. For example, in Book of Acts 16:16-18 Paul encountered a girl who had fortune-telling powers. He then prayed in the name of Christ and commanded the "evil spirit(s)" who had invaded the girl to leave her. Once the spirit(s) did, her fortune telling ability vanished. So I conclude fortune telling is real but is forbidden by God and against what God wants (the best for you).

Why do religious people condemn fortune tellers?

People, whether or not they are religious, may condemn fortune tellers if they believe that fortune tellers are taking advantage of gullible people.Religious people have two further concerns. If people can really tell fortunes without any help from the clergy, then the church loses control of our spirituality. Furthermore, if fortune tellers can not really tell fortunes they might still turn people away from the church. These are good reasons for the faithful to be warned to avoid fortune tellers, and to condemn fortune tellers.

Can people really tell fortune?

No, people cannot really tell your fortune. It is just fiction that people can tell your fortune, as no one can tell the future. "Fortune-telling" isn't "seeing the future", that's a common misconception and worse, prejudice, that people have about certain aspects of these types of practises(such as astrology, etc). In a larger sense, fortune telling is a way of examining who you are and what you do and what you are capable of, and a doctor can reasonably be said to be "telling your fortune" by examining different parts of your body and blood, etc. Numerous ways to "tell a person's fortune" have come up through the ages, some more contrived and less faithful than others, but simply through acts like getting a person to roll sets of dice while asking questions, etc. can a "fortune teller" get an idea of what a person is, where they are at, etc. The teller can then mirror these observations back to the person to hopefully try give them some new sense of guidance and assuredness of their next steps in life, etc. and it's far from any type of "magic" or "seeing the future" misconception(at least on its best terms...like all crafts, professions and endeavours, it's only as good as the person who's performing it). There's more to it, of course, but in a nutshell I would say that "yes, people can tell your fortune" and that they can do it in nearly an infinite numbers of ways(urologists do it by studying your urine, for example) :D
