Reasons why zoos should not be banned?

Many people feel that zoos fill a vital role in educating people about

animals and play an important part in animal conservation. While much

information on animals is available through printed materials and the

internet, it falls far short of allowing people to experience being

near those animals. Many people lack the means to travel to the native

habitats of most animals, and zoos bring animals from many different

climates and locations together in one place. For many people as well,

the experience of being close to these animals has more impact than

simply reading about them. This experience often gives them an affinity

for animals that they may not have otherwise, and an awareness of

conservation efforts.

A lot of people think that zoos are good because they help

repopulate, etc. but did you ever think... that the only reason why we

need to repopulate some species, is because of poaching and hunting? If

we never had poaching and hunting, most animals are capable out there

in the wild... and why look at zoos when you could go to on an African

safari and tour the land?

Zoos are good, but they are not 100% educational. Most people use

the internet and guides to find out about the species. It is really

only for our entertainment. Zoos should be banned because it is cruel

to animals.

With wonderful wildlife programmes on TV these days, we can learn far more about unusual animals than by watching them in the artificial environment of a zoo; on the other hand, many zoos have research and conservation departments (often out of the public view) where many threatened species are preserved and eventually re-introduced into the wild.

there shouldn't be zoos because it is cruel.people say it is educational but it isn't when they're not even in there real environment. when you see the wild cats pacing, they arent doing it to be funny. they are doing it because they are in a cage and they are stressed. they should only put extremly endangered and sick animals in zoos, not the ones that are healthy and fine and would be fine in there actual habitat. how would you like it if you were in a cage all day and people were staring at you and talking about you? i would hate it because i dont know about you but i like to be free not caged up in a limited area.

Zoos have research programs that help expand our knowledge about animals, especially the endangered species. The information gained by these programs can help protect, and treat the species in the wild, as well as determine what affects if any climate change may have on the regions needed for the species to flourish. Many zoos also have breeding programs for all kinds of species, endangered or not, and learn even more about the species during the breeding, and rearing process. All this knowledge and information is shared with visitors, organizations, and other programs alike. There are certainly zoos that do nothing but display animals, but so many have broadened their exhibit goals, and expanded their species scope of responsibility, that each zoo really needs to be judged on its own merits. Animal rights protesters may not be in favour of zoos but the government are.
