UPPP involves the removal of tissue from the soft pallet and the tonsils. Expect a minimum of 2 weeks to recover from this surgery and 4 weeks to feel back to normal.
Days 1-5 - Excruciating pain. You will not be able to swallow and when you do, it will feel like a spear or liquid fire is being poured into your throat. You will most likely not be able to eat or drink and expect to little to no sleep. You will be on heavy pain meds, but they tend to wear off every 2 hours. This means you are up throughout the night in very heavy pain. Any liquid pain medication will burn going down, but this is necessary to blunt the pain and give you the ability to drink any fluids. It is imperative you stay on a pain medication plan. You will need anti-nausea patches due to your empty stomach and powerful nauseating narcotic pain meds.
Days 6-10 - Finally, the pain reduces down to a strep throat level. You've made it through days 1-5 and things begin to get easier. They are still painful, but slowly getting better. You begin taking less and less of the pain meds, but pretty much still taking doses every 4-6 hours. You will be able to eat very little amounts of pudding, mashed potatoes or jello.
Days 11-20 - You can start eating soft normal foods again. At this point, you can start taking over the counter brands such as advil. You're throat will feel tight throughout the day and will be soar in the morning. The pain at this point has reduced down to soar through from a cold and very tolerable.
Fatigue days 10-30 - You will be fatiqued for a good portion of the month throughout the day. This is post op fatigue and more than likely due to the withdrawals from your pain meds in addition to the tiredness that comes from the body trying to heal.
I was not prepared or could not be prepared from the pain that came along with this recovery. Regardless, I would do it again if it meant helping fix my sleep apnea. UPPP will help fix throat obstruction. You may also need to address any obstruction in the nose or by the tongue.
The biggest key in getting by this is an EFFECTIVE pain management strategy.
- Heavy pain medication every 4 hours
- Anti Nausea Patches or liquid medication for stomach pain from Pain meds on a
very empty stomach
- 30 min after pain meds administered, get as much fluid down as possible.
Small sips into mouth first, then swallow with your chin tucked towards your
chest. ( this opens up your air way)
Good luck. It's a great deal of pain for a short period of time that will hopefully pay dividends for you for the rest of your life. Keep that in mind when you are trying to recover.
