Not so much social control but self control. Every religion has certain standards of doing good which must be adheard to if one is to reap the rewards as promised in scripture. When you become a member of a religious body then you abide by its rules as laid down by gospel principles. There are however some religious bodies that are run for the benifit of its leaders and not the members.
