It does not remove tissue per se, but it can damage the protective mucosal lining of the stomach if it is compromised, leading to conditions such as gastritis or ulcers. This lining is made up of epithelial tissue, which produces mucus to protect the stomach from the corrosive effects of the acid.
I am not a medical professional, but it would seem to me that as long as you were getting the nescesarry nutrients into your body via the IV, then a stomach would not be needed, as all the stomach does is break down food. The breakdown occurs so that your colon can digest the food and remove the nutrients. You would not need the food if you were being fed through an IV, so the stomach would be pointless.
