I just finished one in my shop not too long ago. It is by far easier to take off the bed.
There are 8 bolts that hold the bed on and a few guys can lift it off. Unhook the filler neck from the bed and unhook the wires for the tail lights then, lift off the bed and walk it back. This will allow you ample room to remove and replace the pump and sending unit.
