There were 2 factions during the Gilded Age of the Republican Party. James G. Blaine and the Half-Breeds was one Republican Party faction during the Gilded Age. Roscoe Conkling and the Stalwarts were the other faction.

The Stalwarts were a faction within the Republican party. They favored machine politics. Machine politics is where a boss or a small group of individuals run politics and reward their supporters.
Roscoe Conkling was an American politician who served as a U.S. Senator from New York during the late 19th century. Known for his powerful presence and forceful speaking style, Conkling was a prominent figure in the Republican Party and a leader of the Stalwart faction. He was known for his opposition to civil service reform and his close association with President Ulysses S. Grant.

They were leaders of the Radical faction of the Republican Party at the time of the Civil War.
