Well, when Cornwallis surrendered, it had been just a battle that he lost. But when Robert E. Lee surrendered it was the whole reason to why the confederates lost the Civil War.
General Robert E. Lee lost his battle plans at Antietam, when a messenger dropped them and Union solders found them. George McClellan was given the plans and later fired because he let the south retreat.

Robert E. Lee did not loose a leg---at least not in battle. I don't think he lost one due to some complications of old age. He died a few years after the war ended.
It showed the Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army of Virginia was not unbeatable. It had lost the battle of Gettysburg and would never have the stregnth that it possessed before Gettysburg. So After Gettysburg. It was a slow and painful decline for the Confederacy

In the First Battle of Bull Run, it was close to a draw. In the Second Battle of Bull Run it was a decisive victory for the Confederates.
