How long must you be riding to start jumping normally?

Before you can start jumping, you need to be able to control your horse at all speeds while just riding. before you start jumping, you should trot your horse over poles spaced about 10 feet or more feet apart to help your horse get used to adjusting its stride. when you do start jumping, you'll want to start out fairly low, like 1 foot, to get your horse used to it.

Can long pasterns prohibit a horse from having a career in jumping?

Yes. Although a decent lenght of pastern gives the horse a comfortable ride, pasterns that are too long can be a detriment, especially in the sport of jumping. Long, very sloped pasterns can break down with repeated stress, which of course jumping is. If you have a horse with this kind of conformation it may be a good idea to find a less demanding sport. Remember also to use wraps or protective boots when doing vigorous work with your horse. Added caution:When a horse comes down on the other side of a fence his front feet and legs hit the ground first taking all the weight and concussion. Something to think about with long pasterns.

What is the best jumping exercise for a horse to improve his jumping?

Lots of LONG Cavaletti Lines, Hacking, Free Jumping/or on longe, practice lots of jumping in different areas, other than your average arena. And most important, try to just kick, don't use a crop when practicing because then the horse will learn to pick up the pace on his/her own. Oh and jumping all sizes of jumps is great too! (But don't have him pass out!) :D

Can damage be done to a horses leg by jumping?

Yes, a horse could land wrong or slip, it could trip or have any manner of accident and injure one or more of it's legs. If the horse is ridden well by a well balanced rider this will go a long way to helping prevent injuries. However if the horse is used for jumping too often or any truly physical work not just jumping it will develop arthritis in it's joints at some point in it's lifetime.

If you are comfortable doing 70 cm i say Go for it, its lots of fun to jump! As long as you know the horse can do it and that you are ready for it you should be fine. Having an instructor there will help allot.
