Blini
A buckwheat pancake is a type of pancake made with buckwheat flour instead of regular flour. Buckwheat pancakes are darker in color, have a nuttier flavor, and are often denser than traditional pancakes made with regular flour.
A blini is a small pancake, of Russian origin, made from buckwheat flour, traditionally served with melted butter, sour cream and caviar or smoked salmon.
A Russian Pancake is known as a blini.
Pure buckwheat (that has not been contaminated) is gluten and wheat free. Most buckwheat baking, bread and pancake mixes contain wheat flour. Always check labels and if they are not clear, check with the manufacturer.
They are "blintzes". Or at least, this is the Russian equivalent of a English pancake/crepe. (i.e they are not think, unlike the American pancake).
In Wichita, Kansas, you can find buckwheat pancake mix at stores like Whole Foods Market and Natural Grocers. Additionally, larger grocery chains such as Dillons may carry it in their health food or specialty sections. It's always a good idea to call ahead or check online for availability.
It actually means pancake, but it's an euphemism for a pejorative Russian word for prostitute. You could also use it when you are frustrated, without swearing.
Blinis originate from Russia, where they are a traditional dish made from buckwheat or wheat flour. These small, thin pancakes are often served with various toppings such as sour cream, caviar, or smoked fish. Blinis are especially popular during celebrations and festivals, including Maslenitsa, the Slavic pancake week. They are also enjoyed in other Eastern European countries, but their roots are firmly in Russian cuisine.
I found this on the Amazon page for the mix: <http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001VS9PQ> Here is a letter from Quaker Consumer Relations to a customer regarding the discontinuance. dear value customer, We're sorry to disappoint you, but we're no longer making Aunt Jemima Buckwheat pancake & waffle mix. I understand how upsetting it can be to find out a product that you and your family have enjoyed for so many years has been discontinued. There are many reasons why we may discontinue a product, but it's usually because it hasn't met sales expectations. Store chains sometimes stop carrying slower-selling items to make room for new flavors or other products. When too many stores discontinue a product, it becomes difficult to continue making and selling it. It may interest you to know that you can make buckwheat pancakes by using Aunt Jemima Original pancake mix and buckwheat flour. I've listed the recipe below for you: Ingredients: 3/4 cup (175 ml) Aunt Jemima Original pancake mix 1/3 cup (75 ml) buckwheat flour (purchase dark flour) 1/2 tsp (2 ml) baking powder Directions: Stir dry ingredients together and add milk and egg as per package instructions. Thanks for your business and many years of loyalty to Aunt Jemima, James. We hope you and your family will continue to enjoy our products for many more to come. Cathy Quaker Consumer Relations
