It is the Sell by Date, not the Eat by Date. Most foods have a sell by date with the expectation that it will be used in a reasonable amount of time afterwards, not that it will be eaten that day. Dry goods may be perfectly fine for months. Dairy products are usually good for a week to ten days without any problem and can go longer.

As a general rule and a sensible one, the answer is not to eat any out of date foods. If you eat foods with a use bydate which has expired, then you are actually running the risk of food poisoning.

Some people may assert that this is too 'nannyish' and the risk is actually very low. This is possibly true, but realistically, one case of food poisoning could lead to a great deal of discomfort and misery for someone, so each case is one case too many !

Sometimes food may actually be a risk when it looks, smells and even tastes ok, but there could be harmful BACTERIA lurking unseen and undetectable. The reality is that if something is going to poison you the day after its 'use by', it likely would have poisoned you the day of the 'use by'. A huge number of 'best by' dates have nothing to do with bacteria, but everything to do with the quality (flavor, color, texture, appearance) of the product. So it really depends upon each product, its packaging, how old it is and how it has been handled/stored. Potentially hazardous refrigerated goods would be of most concern, microbiologically speaking. Shelf stable dry goods and frozen items are not generally a microbiological problem, but can become inedible due to staling, rancidity, freezer burn and other changes.

How long after sell by date are spicy tuna rolls safe to eat?

Is it safe to eat opened liverwurst after the expiration date?

Yes in the US the most common date seen is not the so called expiration date it is a sell by date. There is no expiration date required on US foods, except for infant formula. The USDA has no idea how you plan to store your food. Some food can last for years if stored properly. So think of it like this, could you think of a reason why a store would sell food that is going to expire the same day they sell it.For instance milk is typically good for 7 days after the SELL by date if kept cool.

What is the difference between sell by and use buy?

Sell-by is the date the store is supposed to be responsible for getting rid of it by. Use-by is the date guranteed safe to eat by, but they are supposed to be moddest and last beyond the expiration date (the use-by date).

Can I use Bisquick after the better if used by date?

It all depends whether it is a sell by date, use by date, or a best before date. If it is a sell by, then that would be an earlier date than an 'eat by' date so it would probably be OK. If it is a best before, then it probably won't taste as good but will still be safe; if it is after a use by date then it may not be safe so you shouldn't eat it.

Is it safe to eat hummus if opened after the best sell by date....Its only been open a week but it has fungus on it?

It is probably safe to eat hummus if opened after the Best Sell By date, as this is the date the manufacture suggests to have it off the shelves by. However, if you see fungus on the product, don't eat it - it has already spoiled and trying to scrape away the fungus to get to the hummus that still looks good can make you sick.
