clarification

Timing chains are INSIDE the engine, meaning that they differ from timing belts in a couple significant features:

1. Timing chains are not exposed to water or dust and as such are protected from the wear associated with those abrasive conditions.

2. Timing chains are constantly exposed to engine oil, both lubricating and cooling the links of the chain.

Timing chains typically will continue to perform well for the life of the rest of the engine. Although a timing chain CAN fail, they typically do not need to be replaced until you have the rest of the engine rebuilt.
