What is the engine? Year? If 2.3 L and the engine knocks due to low grade fuel 87 or 89 octane, then just back off the timing. Hope this helps. This engine should run on 87 octane with no problem. If not check the advance, and pick up in the dist.
can you tell me where the knock sensor is located on a 3.3l mercury villager
As far as I know it doesn't have a knock sensor , my 1995 doesn't have one according to the engine wiring schematic in my Haynes book ( I believe in 1996 with the EEC- V system , the 4.0 L - OHV has a knock sensor )
I'm not a mechanic / technician but the engine wiring schematic in my Chilton repair manual for the 2.3 in a 1994 Ford Ranger does not show a knock sensor
The knock sensor is under the intake manifold, which has to be removed. This should be left to an experienced mechanic.
This is an image. (below)
the knock sensor is under intake, must remove intake and it is under two coolant lines.

I'm not a mechanic / technician but my Chilton repair manual does not show a knock sensor in the engine wiring schematic for the 2.3 liter 4 cylinder in a 1994 Ford Ranger
the knock sensor monitors preignition, spark knock and sends signal to pcm,pcm responds by adjusting ignition timing and fuel timing until knock is gone.
It is under the intake manifold.
