Possibly the short story (The Junkyard ) by Clifford D. Simak as I recall, a real shockeroo with some deep questions-and some welcome humor as one of the characters, an engineer, gets drunk on purpose to defeat the mind-scrambling device in the tunnel He traipses about singing college songs of Georgia Tech! It"s a good story and not for those easily shocked, it"s a shocker.
