The ability to breath under water for long periods of time allows seals and other marine mammals to exploit resources that are not available to terrestrial animals, meaning that they have less competition for resources. The individual male seals that can stay under water for longer can go deeper and hunt for longer meaning that they will, on average, acquire more resources and should therefore be able to gain higher breeding success as they will be 'seen' as better providers by the females. The females who can do this will be better able to successfully raise young as they will have larger stores of energy from which to feed their young during the breeding season
