Most of the highest SEER units are 2 stage units with more parts and more sophistcated controls and therefore more to go wrong. Depending on how long your cooling season is should determine how high you go, since climates with a short cooling season will take longer if ever to experience a payback. I live in NJ with a 2.5 to 3 month cooling season and this past May I installed a 14 SEER, if however I was in Florida I would have considered going 16 or 18.
