Keel boats and later steam boats carried raw materials to New Orleans and carried manufactured goods back up the rivers. During the American Revolutionary War, Daniel Boone used a keel boat to bring ammunition from New Orleans up the Mississippi and Tennessee rivers and the French Broad to Western North Carolina.
