In most cases, you must take Standard First Aid with CPR Level C before you can take an Advance First Aid or Advance Medical First Responder course. I personally have taken Standard First Aid with CPR Level HCP because I intend to take Advance First Aid later.

How do you decrease the size of a hematoma?

an emergency first responder technique would be to apply ice to the hematoma. (put a gauze on the skin first then apply the ice - don't put the ice directly on the skin) this should reduce the swelling. a hematoma is a more serious bruise so the best cure is usually letting the body take care of itself. if the hematoma is life-threatening then the emergency first responder should call Advanced Life Support or seek medical attention

Where can you learn the basics of being a first responder?

If you are police, fire dept or EMT this should be part of your job training. For others, Red Cross and private training is available,. Fees vary from providers and also skill level you wish to obtain. If you are a private citizen, some providers will limit what they will teach non-medical personnel.Field surgery and ACLS{advanced cardiac life support} are not encouraged for non-medical personnel. Check with your local Red Cross first and read and understand your state's Good Samaritan laws for personal liability issues.

What fluids can block the airway?

There are a number of fluids that can block an airway. Two that should immediately come to mind are mucus and vomitous. And blood can also be included in that list. Any of these fluids might be encountered by a first responder in an emergency medical situation. The same applies to the RN or nursing assistant in a medical setting (like a hospital or care facility). There are other fluids that can block an airway, and they might include anything an individual was drinking before encountering an obstructed airway, particularly if it is a thick liquid. Certainly anything being ingested (soup or other fluid-like substances) can obstruct an airway in a given situation. A first responder or medical professional should be able to deal with any fluids obstructing an airway when prividing emergency care.
