For the best possible sound, a subwoofer is recommended. This is most important for games, movies, and music. If you only need to hear sound effects and audio cues, small speakers with no subwoofer are sufficient.

How do you set up a set of 5300 5.1 Creative Inspire speakers directly to the back of a computer with sound on board Asus A7N8X-X?

The surround speakers should plug into your subwoofer, then there should be either 1 or 2 wires that run from your subwoofer to your sound card (onboard sound inputs).

Can the front speakers in a surround sound system be used as stand alone speakers?

Yes and no. Depends on just which front surround speaker you're talking about. If the surround speaker set you have includes a subwoofer, then for standalone you really need the front speakers plus the subwoofer, as the fronts aren't designed to reproduce the bass, but rather to send the bass to the subwoofer. So if you used ONLY the front speakers without the subwoofer, then you'll have very poor bass in the resulting system. If you use the subwoofer plus the front speakers, then it should work just fine.

What should the low pass filter be set to?

If it is a subwoofer amp then set it at about 80 hz.

How does one hook up a subwoofer to an audio system?

It depends on what type of box it is in. For sealed boxes, take the speaker cover off and you just unscrew the speaker from the box. Bandpass boxes usually have to unscrew the plexiglass front then take the speaker cover off and you just unscrew the speaker from the box.

Why is subwoofer cutting out?

It seems like you're using a passive subwoofer. A passive subwoofer doesn't have a power source (an amplifier.) You will need an amplifier for your subwoofer. Let a professional set it up for you.

Can you run an amp without a sub?

You probably could run your subwoofer off of the rear speaker outputs of your head unit, but you probably would not like the result. It takes a great deal of energy to make bass tones and the power output of your radio is relatively limited. The 'subwoofer volume' option is so that you can set the line-level output to a separate subwoofer amplifier and keep the subwoofer level proportionate to the main sound output. Good luck.

Can I get a set of computer speakers that attach to my screen?

The only way that will work is if your screen has speaker plugs.

When you watch a movie on a home theater system does the subwoofer always get involved when the dialogue is spoken in a lower tone?

It will if your surround receiver is configured with the front or center channel speaker as 'small'. If your front speakers are tower-type, then the receiver should be configured with the speaker size set to large. This will allow the subwoofer to reproduce only the LFE channel. If you notice the volume jumps when the frequency of the sound lowers, you probably have your sub turned up too much. Try running a THX sound setup demo that is featured on many different movies.

How do you eliminate the thump from your subwoofer?

That is usually the whole point of a Subwoofer, hearing the music clearer and feeling it. If you don't like the thump, then a subwoofer is not for you! The best way to fix this problem is first you have to remove all the wires from the subwoofer. Than take the subwoofer out of the box and set the subwoofer in a trash can. On trash day wheel subwoofer to end of driveway. Problem solved!

What features should I look for when buying new computer speakers?

Purchasing new computer speakers is not a decision that should be made quickly. When buying new speakers for your computer there are several things to consider before making a choice. Overlooking these factors Obviously, your individual budget will be a major consideration, however it should not be the only factor in your decision. However, the adage about getting what you pay for is rarely more true than when purchasing electronic equipment, sound devices in particular. If you are buying the speakers for a work computer or a child’s first computer, then there is really not much need for anything besides a low end speaker. If it is for a computer you will be using with any frequency, especially one on which music, videos or games will be played often, however, you should buy a good mid-priced set if you can possibly fit it into your budget. There is one thing many people forget about when purchasing pc speakers, but it is a concern that can cause a major amount of inconvenience down the road if it isn’t taken into account. That question is “how often do you use headphones or a headset microphone?” If the answer to that is “frequently”, especially if you keep your computer tower on the floor, it will be important to purchase a type of speaker and/or subwoofer that has separate headphone and mic jacks on the front of it. Otherwise, having to disconnect and reconnect the speakers when you need the headset will not only be inconvenient, but can loosen the connections overtime and shorten the life of your sound card and audio equipment. Another consideration is whether or not you need a set up with a subwoofer. If you use your speakers primarily for music and video, then you probably will need at least a small subwoofer, if not additional speakers for achieving surround sound. On the other hand, if you use your audio set up primarily for gaming, you may not need to spend the extra money on a full set up and a subwoofer may just get into your way. Subwoofers also require an extra electrical outlet, so keep that in mind.
