I do believe that Maytag does not make water heaters. You should buy from somewhere else. Maybe you should look into buying from Sears or just going there to ask them some questions about water heaters.
Provided that you don't run into any major problems a hot water heater should last you somewhere between 5 and 10 years. There should be a serial number on the bottom that will tell you how old your heater is. If the heater starts to leak or you can see rust starting to form then it may be time to replace.

But somewhere on the tank or the paper work that you got with the heater,tells you what wattage of the elements is. If you can't find it, you should be able to see who the MFG of the heater is and model#, you can go online to the mfg website and find info on the heater.
