The original campus of Monash University is Clayton. Currently Monash University is defined as a public university that has 8 campuses. Besides Clayton, the other campuses are Caulfield, Berwick, Peninsula, Parkville and Gippsland, one in Malaysia and one in South Africa.

I am alumnus of Monash Clayton (and to be frank, I do not have a sense of affinity with the other campuses though they are called Monash University). I believe that each campus within the Monash family should be viewed most appropriately as a separate institution, each with its own distinct character.

Lets look at the academics for instance. If you take the time to examine this issue, you should have no trouble to find that there is in fact, a vast difference not just in faculty research productivity between each of the campuses . Differences also exist in terms of faculty experience, qualifications etc.

It should be more natural to follow the model that was established by the University of California system. To view all these campuses as a homogeneous entity is an injustice to them all.

What makes a college a college and not a university?

In modern higher education the distinction and use of college as opposed to university is a semantical term, rather than one based on objective naming criteria. In simplest terms the nomenclature of college or university is the choice of its leadership. By precedence a college was either a singular school of a discipline or distinct unit/faculty of a university. Thus a university was/is/can be comprised of individual colleges. That being said a school named a college can still have individual faculties/departments demonstrating the ambiguous nature of the term.
