Answer

Yes - for family and social reasons it is a good idea to have one or two days in common when everyone can rest and catch up with family and friends, or play sport and so on. In many countries, those days are Saturday and Sunday. Of course, some people, such as emergency services workers, must still work on Saturday and Sunday, at least on a roster basis. Sports administrators, umpires and referees, as well as catering staff are also obviously required to work on some Saturdays and Sundays. Sometimes, other work that is not normally carried out on Saturdays and Sundays must be performed on those days because of urgency or work overload, and employees are requested to these unsocial hours.

The best solution is to legally require higher hourly payment for work on Saturdays and Sundays, thus establishing whether the employer really needs employees to work on those days. Then Saturdays and Sundays can be a rest day for everyone, unless their attendance at work is really justified.
