There are many people who believe strongly that Washington DC should be accorded full statehood. There are also many on the other side of this discussion.
If you simply consider the equity or social justice positionas it relates to the half million people who live in Washington DC, it is hard to argue against giving these people the same rights, responsibilities, and protections that everyone else in the United States receives. Currently they have only a subset of these rights.
The residents of Washington DC heartily agree with gaining statehood and in fact voted in a constitution of New Columbia in 1982.
The argument against this is that the Constitution specifically requires Congress to oversee the Federal Area, which is taken to mean all of Washington DC. DC also receives help and money from Congress that other states do not get.
Congress has continually ignored the states rights issue and avoided voting on the issue.
