At the base.
Most fire extinguishers are designed to cool the fire, which is the chemical reaction occurring at the surface of the flammable materials, at the base of the flames. The risk of directing any fire stream or extinguisher at the top of the flames is that the higher heat at that height may waste all the cooling power of the extinguisher before it can have any effect upon the flaming materials.
For example, some sprinkler systems are unable to extinguish a hot fire beneath them unless they are activated before the air temperature reaches the boiling point of water.
A few specialized extinguishers are intended to smother the fire by settling down upon the flaming materials, and may be safely sprayed or released above the flames.
When a liquid fire extinguisher has a hose, the stream of liquid coming from the hose is called the "hose stream" and can be directed at the base of the flames.

The bottom or base- where the fuel is located.
The fire extinguisher contents are designed to interact with the fuel/air boundary, so you need to aim at where the fuel is burning, that is, "at the base of the flames."
My dad s a retired fire fighter and the mechanisms he used were although more olden kind, they were similar to the fire extinguisher. In a life threatening situation you must not panic and aim it in the middle up of the fire, releasing the outer burning energy and then go around it smothering the fire. HOPE THAT HELPS!!!
Fire is a chain reaction of fuel combining with oxygen when there is enough heat to continue burning. The actual "fire" is taking place only at the surface of the fuel, i.e., the "base" of the fire. Spraying fire extinguisher chemicals or water into the smoke or flames is not as effective as aiming directly at the source of the fire.

At the base of the flames, you want to cover whats on fire with the extinguisher media. The exception would be if it is 'blowing' embers everywhere and making it worse, quickly make the decision to try to extinguish the fire some other way, like a wet towel, sand, garden hose, etc. **Aim at the base of the fire and use a sweeping motion.**
