It depends on their reading level and maturity.
Personally, I started reading Harry Potter when I was seven and I understood it but always been in the higher reading levels and always been mature for my age. Even then, I still didn't fully understand the whole plot and it was only years later when I re-read them that I did.
I'd say give it a try, possibly reading it to them would be best.
