It's obvious.
Children should not be subjected to adult entertainment.
Extreme gore, violence, sex, and profanity are prohibited (or censored) from television during times when children are likely to be watching. A good law.
Film is a different story. There is really no censorship per se. Films can include pretty much anything that the producers so desire. Doing so though can get a little sticky when the film goes before the ratings board.
A rating of NC-17 can spell death to a film because most theaters in America will not show them. So producers tend to censor themselves.
That is really a business decision for the theaters more than it is a censorship issue.
