Yes you can but an antiviral should also be used. Hydrocortisone by itself doesn't do much for cold sores, it's an anti-inflamitory cream. It may help with the symptoms and swelling but antivirals will attack the virus that causes cold sores and fever blisters to help prevent it from reproducing in other cells.
my daughter was prescribed this by a doctor for cold sores / impetigo
You can, but it isn't recomended, because the surgery area is still sore, and putting stuff on there like that, could make it worse or infected because you aren't suppose to touch them for a little while. You should just take the medicine that your dentist prescribed to you. And for me, he gave me Loratab stuff, and I would take it in the morning, and if it still hurt then you are allowed to take Advil or Ibruprophen so they overlap each other so you feel better all day long. But i wouldn't recommend touching your sores with that stuff until you go and see your doctor and they say that it is okay, or until your stitches come out, if you had stitches.
Hydrocortisone Top can be used on the scalp; however, it should not be used if there are sores or cuts in the area. Always check the package for uses before using hydrocortison products.
