Yes and is vital that it is taught. Art is a subject that a number of skills are needed and enhanced though art. Math is used in art, critical thinking, perceptual motor development, fine motor skills, right and left laterality, and so much more. Higher order thinking skills and creativity is enhanced through art. It allows for another form of expression and adds a view of the world not otherwise seen by the teacher. For small children it gives them a chance to work on fine motor skills that will translate into skills for writing and reading. The world would loose a great deal if there was no art.

How is a church school different to other schools?

The general answer is that a church school (assuming Christianity is the church) teaches religion as a topic in addition to the other topics such as Math and English. There are differences within which school you are asking about as well. In the past, many Catholic schools did not teach computers, music or art to the same degree that public schools have. While a gap may still exist, it is not as prominent as it once was. Private religious schools (prep schools or academies) are usually more expensive but is more improved than public schools and teach all of the same courses.Other differences include uniform requirements, cost differences (public school in the U.S. is free), Weekly mass attended by the school (during school hours).
