No it's either a hypertrophic reaction, which is due to the cleaning products used to clean the piercing or Cauliflower ear caused by piercing the ear cartilage with a piercing gun. Nothing to be scared about.

Does Claire's use a gun for cartilage piercings?

A piercing gun should not be used on cartilage as it's more likely to cause damage to the cartilage. Piercing guns should be avoided at all costs due to the multiple health risks. If you want a piercing go to a piercing studio where there are professionally trained piercers who use the correct jewelry and safe tools.

Does the septum get pierced through the cartilage?

No it doesn't get pierced through the cartilage. I actually had a woman come in with a septum piercing that was done by a so called "body mods artist", the piercing was done through the cartilage and was causing all sorts of issues for the lady. Piercing the cartilage is actually dangerous in that area and more subject to possible infection. The actual piercing is between the exteriour meatus and the physical cartilage, the web between these structures is only the thickness of a dime, this is the area the piercing should be placed. Any other location and the piercing is done incorrectly. Do your research and be sure your piercing is done by an actual "professional body piercer" working in a licensed and inspected facility (not a kitchen on a Saturday night).

Should you turn and or rotate your cartilage piercing?

Im not sure if you should or not, but it should help. It prevents the piercing healing around the jewllery. Also it makes the healing area used to movement and more resistant to it.

How involved are the steps for doing a cartilage piercing?

The process of piercing cartilage is generally quick and uncomplicated, unlike the healing process of this type of piercing. First, the instruments and area around where the piercing will be need to be cleaned thoroughly. Next, a trained professional will pierce your ear with a hollow needle, using marks to ensure the piercing isn't crooked. Once the needle is through both layers of skin and the cartilage, the jewelry should be inserted into the hollow needle and pulled through the fresh piercing with the needle.

Does it hurt to get a nose piercing done with a gun?

Do not get it done with a gun! Its really dangerous and any piercing shop should know this, if a piercing place is saying they do it with a gun. Do NOT go to them. Do it with a needle only. Guns are only for ears, and your not even supposed to use a gun on the cartilage of your ear, it could shatter your cartilage.

Do you have to have a stud pierce on your cartilage on the ear when you first get it?

no. if you are not prone to irritation or infection you should be ok. Many people do though, because they are not sure how they're cartilage will react to a strange metal and they just want to be on the safe side. cartilage piercings are also not changed as often as earlobe piercings and so people like to choose a fancier stud or ring.
