I think so, because the harshness trains the soldiers.
Wilkerson v. Utah was the case in which it was decided that burning at the stake was considered to be cruel and unusual punishment. While this case addressed the idea that shooting a person to death was considered cruel and unusual punishment the government looked at all manners of death that should be labeled as such.

Even if it isn't it sure as hell should be! The military has my husband sleeping on an empty cot/floor in a communtity day room at the barracks, because of another soldiers mistake! I think its cruel and should not be allowed to treat our own soldiers in such a manner!!!!
Yes they should be allowed to recruit for our all volunteer military it is a great career choice for some.

Federal law forbids the military and government employees to strike, and the military is further forbidden to form unions. Similar to police and fireman being declared essential employees and not allowed to strike, government employees and the Armed Forces are equally 'essential.'
