If your over charging your battery it ruins the battery therefore it will no longer holds a charge like it should. Trust me I killed two batteries before I learned why.

An alternator is not designed to full charge a battery but maintain a healthy one. By charging a new battery you ensure that your getting the most out of it by not allowing sulfation from charging and discharging to the batteries original 80 percent.
