I've had chemically processed hair since 5th grade and stopped proccessing it December 2008 (I'm 27). I'd leave it natural. I couldn't deal with the burning, scabs and bald spots anymore. My hair has recovered as is growing nicely and better than when I had chemically processed hair.
The solvent can be evaporated off and this will leave a solid residue. Is the process of solution was just that, then the weight of material recovered should be the same as that originally dissolved. However chemically you may not have the same compounds.
