Afghan hounds are relatively inactive indoors and in many ways, they are couch potatoes. They do need moderate exercise however. A one hour walk, one or two times daily is sufficient. Considering their origins as runners, they do need a wide open space to run and stretch their legs, at least 4 times a week if not daily. Make sure it is a fenced area. An outdoor tennis court will be best. These dogs are sighthounds and will chase anything that moves!! They can also reach speeds of 30 miles/hour in 9 seconds! That's faster than a Thoroughbred race horse!! Trust me when I say, if it gets away from you, you won't be able to chase it. They are not the most obedient dogs. Rather independent. It's either their way, or the highway kind of dogs.
All in all, this breed can adapt well to apartment life considering its quiet and laid-back nature. However, you must commit to giving it the proper amount of exercise or it might become destructive. They require consistent training with a gentle hand. These are sensitive dogs. They are VERY intelligent, but not very obedient.
I would recommend a teenage or adult Afghan who has already passed the energetic puppy stage.
Ten to fifteen years. Smaller dogs live longer than larger breeds.
In a house or apartment.
The Basset hound will do okay in an apartment. They are very inactive indoors but outdoors they will run for hours in play if given the chance. They will do okay without a yard, but should be given plenty of opportunities to run and play to keep it healthy and trim.
