I can't answer your question as framed. What are the facts surounding your decision/question? You or someone else? Given a willing parent, qualified available Online software and textbooks, a good syllabus, proper student motivation, I would offer Homeschool as first choice, but you may have access to a great public or charter school like KIPP programs or others.

It is very hard to give an overall answer to questions like these. There are a lot of things to consider.

Some variables:

  • Does the parent have the patience to sit down and do their part everyday
  • Does the parent have the patience they need
  • Does the state you are in have gifted programs for the home or school
  • Does the parent and child have a good dynamic
  • Does the child do better in a setting outside the home
  • Can the parent afford to supply the materials and trips needed to keep the child challenged
  • What methods does the child learn best with
  • Does the child need a very hands on or a more standoffish approach

Three real life examples:

1. My older daughter virtual schools. She is self disciplined by nature, loves to push herself, and is okay with not having friends around during the school day. She is outgoing enough to make friends through scouts, soccer, and other means. She prefers to have minimal instruction, and to figure things out on her own. With virtual school, she is on honor roll students in gifted programs. We take a lot of field trips, and supplement where we can.

2. One of my daughters' good friends is gifted, and she goes to public school. Her school has good gifted programs, and she is also involved in scouts and other functions. She prefers to be around more people during the day, and learns better from an instructor. She prefers not to have to use a computer. Her mom is still quite involved with her education, but in different ways, such as heading the PTO.

She is also an honor roll student in gifted programs.

3. My younger daughter is homeschooled. She is very smart, but does not like doing school work at all. She needs much more one on one attention, and occasional prods to get her math done when she is sneaking off to write a book. Even having gifted programs in our area, she does better having more one on one. It is something that the teachers are not able to give them as much of with their classes being overcrowded, despite the fact I am sure most of them are trying. With more attention, she also stays on honor roll with gifted curriculum.

Every case is different. Talk to your child, and see what they are interested in. Evaluate your own situation as a parent. You can always give homeschooling a try, and if it is not working out for you, the school system is still there. As long as you give it all you've got, you aren't going to set them behind.

Why is home school better than public school?

In homeschool, a child is with someone who knows them. In public school, the teacher deals with many other students. In homeschool, the child learns at their own pace. In public school, it's either the smarter having to wait for the less smart to figure it out and learning less than they could, or the people that don't understand yet left confused as the teacher moves on. In homeschool, you can get help when you need it. What happens when your homework confuses you in public school and your parents can't help? In homeschool, you can develop your talents. In public school, the future artist and the math geek who can't draw a straight line get the same lessons. In homeschool, your parents can teach you how to behave around others. In public school, you get the list of rules. Is the list of rules going to stop the three jock kids beating up the one weak nerd? No, the list of rules is going to hang on the wall, unresponsive, while nobody is in the hallway. In homeschool, you still have a social life. Public school is where talking gets you yelled at. After school is when you can be with your friends. In homeschool, the chances of cheating on a test decrease since there's nobody to get the answers from. In homeschool, answers will be given faster. In homeschool, you're not 'some kid from one of my Math classes.' You're 'my son/daughter, who I happen to teach.' In homeschool, it's easier to make everyone care about the subject and explain it to everyone individually- there's only one person to explain it all to. In public school, saying it in a good way for everyone would have high schoolers just discovering long division and struggling to read this answer in the average class of thirty. And guess what happens when you're all from different elementary schools? That's right, all the new middle schoolers that knew this in fourth grade sit through the explanation with the kids who don't know this.

Can a student take homeschool electives while attending public school?

Some states such as Main and New Mexico allow mixed home schooling/public school attendance. You should check with the public schools department in your locale.
