There is no reason why you should unless the rooster is overly aggressive toward the hens. Roosters protect the flock and of course mate with the hens so unless you have an objection to fertilized eggs, then allow the rooster to be with his flock. Roosters are sociable creatures and should be allowed to mingle with the other birds.

If you must keep the rooster in the cage with the chicks I would recommend watching them closely for the first few days. Also , if a hen hatched the chicks she will most likely defend them.

Chickens are not bad. Chickens are nervous when a human comes close and squawk and wing flap, this is an expression of alarm. This can be frightening to kids who are nervous. A rooster can defend his flock and chase children or nervous adults but keep in mind these are birds, there is very little harm they can inflict on you.
