This is because when the system sends the 'Quit' or 'Exit' command to running applications, the application will ask if you want to save your work before quitting. This dialogue will stall the shut down procedure if it is not answered. So setting up to shut down when closing the cover would often fail. This would probably drain the battery and people would ask, "How can I get my laptop to go to sleep just by closing the cover?" When you close the lid of your MacBook Air, it does not shut down. It puts itself in Sleep Mode. To make sure that your MacBook Air is in sleep mode when you close the lid, simply look at the sleep light. It is the white light that glows. There is no setting that you can change to make your MacBook Air shut down when you close the lid. Operating Systems do not work that way.
