It is only in recent years that actors have been in ads. All the early ones like John Wayne weren't in ads or TV shows. Movie actors and TV actors did not cross over into the others medium. There were also many actors before the 1950's not in ads because TV didn't exist before 1950. In the 1950's and 60's many ads were placed right into the TV shows. I remember the Dick Van Dyke show having a ad right in the show as part of it. The View does that now.
