∙ 14y agoThree of the main characters in 'Oedipus Rex' try to react differently and unexpectedly to their perceived fates. But the more they alter their behavior, the closer they come to their foretold destiny. The gods can't be faulted in any of these cases of behavior modification. In each of the cases, each of the three individuals in question makes flawed choices and decisions that aren't thought through carefully.
For example, subsequent Theban King Oedipus is raised to believe that Corinthian King Polybus and Queen Merope are his parents. He learns that he's fated to kill his own father and marry his own mother. Oedipus is a decent individual who respects his family and his people. So he tries to run away from such a horrendous fate. He instead collides with it when he kills Theban King Laius and marries Theban Queen Jocasta, both of whom are his biological parents.
So it can be said that the gods warn Oedipus of the fated scenario. In his pride, Oedipus thinks that he understands the situation and that he has a winning game plan. But he drops his guard and doesn't question what comes across his path. He needs to question any difficult interactions with individuals old enough to be his father, and any romantic interactions with individuals old enough to be his mother.
