The idea for Google Doodle came about before Google was even incorporated. In 1998, Sergey and Larry were playing around with the corporate logo to indicate their attendance at the Burning Man festival. Later in 2000, the two asked an intern to produce a doodle for Bastille Day. It was extremely well received, and has been tradition since.
Ruth Kedar designed the current official Google logo, while Sergey Brin created the first logo back in 1998. Google holds a competition called Doodle4Google which K-12 students enter in designs, and whoever wins gets to visit the Google headquarters and has their design as the logo for 24 hours.
The original Google image was crated by Sergey Brin, it was updated in 2009 by Ruth Kedar to it's current logo. Since 2009 there have been many interactive logos many of which have been designed by Dennis Hwang.
Google has had several logos since its renaming from BackRub. The current official Google logo was designed by Ruth Kedar, and is a wordmark based on the Catull typeface.[1] The company also includes various modifications and/or humorous features, such as cartoon modifications of their logo for use on holidays, birthdays of famous people, and major events, such as the Olympics.[2] These special logos, some designed by Dennis Hwang, have become known as Google Doodles. Google subsidiary YouTube has also featured some custom logos to highlight special events occurring on the site, these have been unofficially nicknamed "Yoodles".[3]The Google logo used from May 31, 1999 until May 5, 2010, changing the previous logo's typeface and dropping its exclamation point. The typeface was changed and an exclamation mark was added, mimicking the Yahoo! logo.[4] "There were a lot of different color iterations", says Ruth Kedar, the graphic designer who developed the now-famous logo. "We ended up with the primary colors, but instead of having the pattern go in order, we put a secondary color on the L, which brought back the idea that Google doesn't follow the rules."[5](Source: Wikipedia)
