Concerning settlements in North America, Ralegh sponsored, along with other investors, and organized the first two of the four Roanoke voyages. The first was in 1584 and the second in 1585. The two voyages were mainly reconnaissance expeditions and consisted of men only. The third voyage was in 1587 and consisted of men, women and boys. It was the only one of the first three voyages that truly attempted settlement in the New World. It took place on Roanoke Island in what is now North Carolina. It was a failure. Ralegh did not sponsor the settlement voyage. He had sold his interests to others and he merely lent his name to the organization of the expedition. The fourth voyage in 1590 was an attempt to find out what had happened to the 1587 settlers. No trace was found other than two somewhat cryptic clues carved into a tree and a palisade. Ralegh did not accompany any of the voyages and his only trips to the Americas were to South America.

Sir Walter Raleigh
(1585)
Sir Walter Raleigh's father's name was Walter Raleigh.
Sir Walter Raleigh was an investor and promoter of the Roanoke Island colony, but he was not directly responsible for its settlement. He sponsored expeditions to the area in the late 16th century with the aim of establishing an English presence in the New World. The colony ultimately failed, and the fate of the settlers remains unknown, leading to the mystery of the "Lost Colony."
