William Crookes added to our knowledge of the atom that matter was composed of tiny particles
What did Sir William Crookes contribute to the atomic theory? Absolutely nothing! The whole of Crookes's considerable research effort was devoted to molecules.
There are many different scientists responsible for the modernization of the atomic theory, but the first to actually describe them as atoms was Democritus and Leucippus in 5th Century BCE. For more information on the development of the atomic theory, look up these scientists (in no particular order): Dalton, Rutherford, Bohr, Chadwick, J.J. Thomson, and Mendeleev (he created the periodic table)
