Slavery was a large part of Americas history, Even George Washington had many slaves. granted he released them he says as a matter of conscience. however not until he had reached old age and the people that were forced to work for him were not paid proper compensation for their time in bondage. Slavery was destined to become a drain on industry as the rest of the developed country's of the world abandoned it. It is possible to force people to work for you. however it is not possible to motivate people to work enthusiastically, informatively. and efficiently if there is nothing in it for them. Slavery is against human values the US was just one of the last to realize it and do something about it. I am afraid that Pragmatism will put an end to slavery in the end, not values.
