Byzantine accounts make many references to their attempts to push past the Greek Empires northern borders and their constant efforts to take Thessaloniki. The most famous account is of Basil II Porphyrogenitus, (Greek: Πορφυρογέννητος, literally "born in the purple") also known as Basil the Bulgar Slayer. When defeating the invading Bulgarians he is said to have captured 15,000 Bulgarian prisoners and blinded 99 of every 100 men, leaving one one-eyed man in each cohort to lead the rest back to their ruler. Samuel the king of the Bulgarian hordes was physically struck down by the dreadful apparition of his blinded army and died two days later, on 6 October 1014, after suffering a stroke.
