Smoke coming out of the house air conditioner and heater unit is likely coming from dust that gets on the heater coils throughout the year. It is a good idea to have those coils and the rest of the unit serviced before the winter and summer months.

Well it depends on what you mean by "blow out" but just today I wired some stuff wrong and it shorted out, smoke was coming out of the cassette deck. In other words, it is possible to instantly destroy your head unit if something is done wrong.
If it is truly smoke and not condensate then you should turn off the unit and call a repair shop. It could be burning insulation on motor or some othe component. Smoke is not your friend.

Find the condensate drain and make sure it is open. If there is no condensate drain, figure out how to drain the condensate.
A smoke alarm should never be turned off. If your smoke detector is not working correctly, you can start by taking a vacuum or a can of compressed air and clean any dust or dirt from inside the unit. If cleaning the unit does not help then you will need to have it replaced or repaired.
