Get a Bromine test kit and a pH test Kit. The bromine level should be around 4.0ppm and the pH should be around 7.4.To raise Bromine, add Bromine. To lower Bromine, add waterTo raise pH: add soda AshTo lower pH: add Muriatic AcidAs for the foam, it is caused by tanning oils, sunblocks, shampoos, conditioners, soap, body oil, fabric cleaners etc. To correct this problem add hexametaphosphate or "Foam Out".

Is Bromine or chlorine better for hot tubs?

Bromine is better overall as a solution than chlorine for hot tubs. Bromine Tablets are EPA registered, are an excellent sanitizer choice, are inexpensive and very easy to use. Used best with a floating feeder system, Bromine is superior to chlorine in that once free chlorine is combined with waste, it has no further sanitizing capability. For water pool treatment Trichlor tablets work great. Because of the high acidic nature, this particular type of chlorine is not recommended in spas. It also dissolves too slow to be effective. If the spa shell is exposed to Trichlor for a prolonged period of time, bleaching of the spa shell can occur and can often cause a permanent ring at the water line of the spa shell.

Will bromine water kill the grass?

I changed from using chlorine to bromine in my hot tub. As usual, I watered my grass with the old spa water when I cleaned and changed it. Chlorinated water never hurt the grass. However, the bromine water left me with brown and apparently dead grass and a withered tree. It took about a year for it to come back but it did. I found another less vulnerable place to discharge the spa the next few times. All seemed well. Now I am seeing a large withering tree further out in the yard. I am thinking that the salts have leached down to the roots and are causing the problem. I will not discharge the bromine water into my yard any more. I will use the sanitary sewer where I know the water will be properly treated without affecting the environment. I hope my tree recovers and the remaining salts disperse soon.

When pH testing a pool or spa, what do the colors on the test strip mean?

If your result is orange you are right where you need to be. If it turns yellow you will have to add chlorine to balance the pH levels out. Like I said though, orange is perfect and you will only have to check it twice a month.

Why does your spa test strip turn blue or purple?

When you state or ask Why does your spa test strip turns blue - - - My test strips do not turn blue! Your question should be: Why do test strips turn blue when testing water in a spa? or something similar to that. What portion of the test strip is turning blue? Chlorine reading, pH reading, alkalinity reading, conditioner reading? I'm not sure what your problem is. Are you testing the water right after adding chemicals? What chemicals are you using? How old are your test strips? Have the test strips been left in the sun for any length of time? When did you last change the spa water? Answering these questions and more may make it easier to come to a conclusion on your question.Since there is so little water in a spa -- changing the spa water and cleaning the filters at the same time may alleviate your problem -- rather than trying to adjust the chemistry of the water.

What chemicals are usually required for spas?

Chlorine and bromine are the common chemicals used in spas. Chlorine can be used in spas, but in a different concentration to that in pools. Bromine can also be used and is a combination of sodium bromide and chlorine. Bromine is a favoured option as the smell is not as strong as chlorine. Both are available in tablet form. Please check the instructions to determine the amount needed for your spa before use.
