In 1898 a peace treaty was signed between The United States and Spain who had been at war. This war was known as the Spanish-American War. Because Spain lost the war it had to turn over Cuba, The Philipines, Puerto Rico and Guam to the United States as part of the conditions for peace.

The Philippine Islands, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the island of Guam were controlled by Spain until the Spanish-American War of 1898.
Although Puerto Rico is a country, it is not an independent country. Puerto Rico is a US territory, officially known Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (Estado Libre Asociado in Spanish). There are some who believe that Puerto Rico was on its way to independence when Spain granted the Island an Autonomic Charter (Carta Autonómica) which granted many political and administrative privileges, but all this came to a halt in 1898. In 1898, Spain lost the Spanish-American War to the USA. Puerto Rico was part of the war booty that Spain had to turn over to the USA government. Until 1952, the Island was considered simply a territory. In 1952, the United Nations pressured the United States until it granted Puerto Rico its own Constitution, and permitted its citizens to vote for their own governor instead of being governed by an appointed governor. The Spanish-American War was mainly fought for Cuban independence. The Americans fought with the Puerto Ricans, Cubans, and Filipinos against the Spanish. The American side won and then the US acquired three Spanish territories: the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico. The US also acquired Cuba although this was not a transfer from the Spanish.
