Yucatan is not a Spanish word. The origin is uncertain, but it is thought that it may be a Mayan word meaning: I don't understand you. Others have suggested that it comes from the Aztec language and means: place of wealth. See the related link for further information.

They arrived to Yucatan on the first days of March, 1519. They arrived to the uninhabited Isla Mujeres, about 13 kilometers (8 mi) east of the Peninsula.
There were two easternmost Spanish settlements on the northern frontier of Spanish Mexico. The first settlement was Mexico City, and the second was the Yucatan.
The Mayans originated in Guatemala from the 4th to the 10th centuries. Starting in the Late period until the Spanish Conquest, they migrated and settled in the Yucatan region of Mexico.
