Primary succession occurs in lifeless areas where soil has not yet formed, such as after a volcanic eruption or glacial retreat, leading to the gradual establishment of a biological community. Secondary succession takes place in areas where a disturbance has destroyed an existing community but left the soil intact, such as after a forest fire or agricultural abandonment, allowing for faster recovery and regrowth.
