The stator & rotor are attached to the left side of the motor inside the primary chaincase and the voltage regulator is directly in front of the front cylinder.
if you have a charging system you have to have a voltage regulator. if not the system will overcharge the battery and short it out/melt it down. you can run a total loss sytem which is what most road race bikes use. only problem is you have to charge the battery every time and you have a limited opperating time depending on what model it is
Your alternator is defective. Could be the internal voltage regulator or one or more bad diodes. Replace as soon as you can to avoid getting stranded on the road.

There are three reasons: the belt broke (most likely), the alternator went out or the voltage regulator went out. If you have a pre-1972 Bus, the belt drives the engine cooling fan so get off the road and shut down immediately if the light goes on.
