Democracy- but there is no perfect one!
Each branch of government checks each other in the system of checks and balances. This includes the legislative branch, along with the the executive and judicial. The branches basically check each other to make sure no branch is abusing their powers.

In the American government, the purpose of checks and balances, is to make sure no single branch gets too much power. By the system of checks and balances, each branch can limit the other two, and the other two can limit that specific branch.
The legisative branch make laws and the other branches don't make laws
They incorporated the idea of checks and balances so that one branch of the government can not completely take control. The Legislative branch is limited by the Executive branch. The Executive branch is limited by the Judicial branch. The Judicial branch is limited by the Legislative branch. It all balances itself out in the end
The system of checks and balances is an important part of the Constitution. With checks and balances, each of the three branches of government can limit the powers of the others. This way, no one branch becomes too powerful. Each branch "checks" the power of the other branches to make sure that the power is balanced between them.
Checks and balances is where the Legislature, Executive, and Judicial branch look over each other and make sure no one branch gets too powerful. If the Judicial branch doesn't like something that the Executive branch likes, they can veto it.
The farmers included a system of check and balances into the constitution because they believed that each branch of government can exercise checks, or controls, over the other branches. Not the FARMERS, man!
They created that complicated system in order to make it difficult for government to take "hasty and inconsiderate actions."
The United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate make up the legislative branch of government. The other branches are the executive branch and the judicial branch.
